Did you know that 97% of the top brands use Twitter as a part of their social media marketing strategy? Twitter‘s an arena where it’s possible to garner many followers, and that makes it easy for followers to engage with your brand.

It’s also the channel that’s the most unique and requires a very different approach. It is the social media channel where you stand to make a significant impact if you get things right.

Getting things right, though, can be a bit problematic. Hashtags are one area on Twitter that causes users a lot of pain. Here is how to get the hashtags right every time.

Less Is More

This is no news to you, but you would be surprised how many marketers are slapdash in this area. There is no official limit to the number of hashtags that you can use, but you do have to remember that each one uses up precious characters.

Twitter recommends that you choose the top two most relevant hashtags and stick to those, and that is excellent advice. More than that’s not likely to improve your results substantially and could end up leaving the wrong impression.

It looks messy to start with and gives the impression that you don’t really know what you are doing. Five or six hashtags and you start looking desperate for attention.

Also, when you concentrate on the hashtags, you have less space to focus on your message. Maybe the company you are representing is having the sale of the century; if your message gets lost in the hashtags, no one will ever know.

How To Choose The Right Hashtags

If the company is running an Amazon promo code for its clients, you could use hashtags like “sale” or “Amazon promo” or “top deals,” etc. There is any number of potential keywords.

What is advisable is to consider using the same approach as you would when researching keywords for SEO purposes. You want your hashtags to have the best balance between impact and competition.

Start by looking at what topics are trending on Twitter. If you look at the left-hand side of your page, you will see trending topics Twitter feels are most relevant to your page. These trends are based on your location and who you follow.

So, do spend some time looking for influencers in your field and relevant local people that you can follow. This will help you make the trends recommendation a lot more accurate. You can, if you want to, hit the “Change” button and input your own location to get a more targeted trends list.

The thing is, though trends are important, you should not get too caught up in them. Use them as potential suggestions, not the whole basis for your strategy. Choose trends that are relevant to what your tweet is about to increase user engagement.

If you add a trending hashtag, make sure that it is relevant to your content, or you will just end up looking desperate for attention and unprofessional again.

Look at the Hashtag as a Keyword

Now that you have some ideas for hashtags to use let’s look at them like we would to a keyword. Try typing in the potential hashtag in the Twitter search bar and see how many results come up.

Take the hashtag “sale” for example. How many results came up? It is a hashtag that gets a lot of attention, but is it a good one to use? Not so much, because there is a lot of competition out there.

Certainly, there is a good chance your tweet will come up when someone searches for “sale,” but so will hundreds of thousands of others. You can refine the search results by adding in the word “summer,” so your hashtag would then be “summer sale,” for example.

That’s one hashtag taken care of. Want to get more targeted traffic? Where is your business? If you are in a smaller town, use the town’s name. If you are in a big city, considering narrowing it down to the suburb.

So, for example, you could try using the word “London” or, even better, “Newham,” because that is the Borough your business is in. So, in this case, you would be using the hashtags, “London” and “SummerSale.”

Do experiment with different hashtags to see which ones work best for your business. But always follow the cardinal rule – hashtags should be relevant and useful. Don’t be the marketer that stuffs in as many hashtags as possible out of desperation.
