As Twitter explains Twitter is a service for friends, family, and coworkers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent messages. Tweet: a Twitter single update of 140 or fewer characters, which can include @Mentions to other users, hashtags, external links, or simply regular text.

Retweet or “RT”: taking a tweet from one user and posting it yourself, automatically crediting the source, so that all of your followers can see the tweet.

Trending Topics (TTs): “Trending Topics” lists a range of subjects which many users across Twitter are talking about simultaneously. The “Trending Topics” list contains things that thousands of people across the whole of Twitter are discussing at any one time. When you click on a Trending Topic in the list, it will bring up a range of tweets, mentioning each matter of interest, and for each Trending Topic there will be up to three ‘Top Tweets’ highlighted. Those are the tweets in each topic which have been retweeted more than 150 times.

Lists: Users can organize the people they follow into lists of businesses or personalities, which are related in some way.

Promoted Tweets: A single trending topic which a company or organization can pay to ‘trend’, as to gain attention and traffic from Twitter users worldwide.

1. Tweeting

To start tweeting the next thing to do is simply to post something that you are doing, something you see or any other thing you are interested in sharing. A tweet should be no more than 140 characters; otherwise, the “Tweet” button will go into a minus.

Decide your own style and times for tweeting. Twitter, like many social media applications, can become addicting and time-sucking. 3. Retweeting

A Tweet that you share publicly with your followers is known as a Retweet. This is a great way to pass along news and interesting discoveries on Twitter. You have the option to add your own comments before Retweeting—making it a Quote Tweet. When using Twitter‘s Retweet icon, your Retweet or Quote Tweet will reference the Tweet you are sharing. Note: When someone replies to your Quote Tweet, the author of the original Tweet will not be automatically added to the conversation. If you want to include the author of the original Tweet, you will need to mention their username.

4. Gathering Followers

Your Twitter can be as intimate or as big as you choose. If your goal is to gather lots of followers, though, be sure to keep your posts interesting and relevant. You shouldn’t underestimate the power of following others, either—often times if you follow someone they’ll follow you back. Finally, give your favorite followers shout outs occasionally. Re-tweets are a real time affirmation of someone else’s statement and is often rewarded with a following.

Finally, search for specific tweets using hashtags or specific words and phrases, accounts, or ongoing conversations. You can find Tweets from yourself, friends, local businesses, and everyone from well-known entertainers to global political leaders.
