Twitter launched in July 2006. Considering how quickly things change in the digital realm, it’s not a complete exaggeration to say that the last 11 years feel more like the equivalent of a century of evolution and refinement in social media. The term “social media manager” didn’t even exist as a job until the last decade. The latest data shows that over 500 million tweets are posted every day, that’s nearly 6000 every second – in the time it took you to read that sentence nearly 25,000 new tweets went out! Who can keep up with this virtual freight train, speeding into the future? You, that’s who! All you savvy social media marketers and managers out there, reading this post, staying up to date on the latest news and industry trends. Hats off to you. Digital high five! We know how tough it is to stay on the ball, and we’re here to help. Whether you’ve been managing social media for a while and need a refresh, or if it’s your first time up to bat, here are six tips that will set you up for social success.

No.1: Create a content calendar.

This isn’t the first time we’ve advocated for a content calendar and it definitely won’t be the last. A content calendar can be your saving grace in the world of social networking. It’s the thing that separates the pros from the amateurs, the roadmap that will help ensure your posts have relevance, continuity, and flow.

Plan your posts at least a month in advance and you won’t miss out on opportunities to jump into conversations around seasonally relevant topics or have to scramble at the last minute to support your product launch. Of course, your calendar isn’t carved in stone (it’s probably not even done on paper, duh) and you should be ready to adapt to changes and current events on the fly, but it’s an awesome place to start. Don’t know how to make one? Read this post.

No.2: Don’t be afraid to repost content.

Unlike a lot of other social networks (including Instagram, to most people’s chagrin), Twitter doesn’t curate content using an algorithm. Instead, the reverse chronological timeline displays tweets in one continuous stream. At 6000 tweets a second that means that your post about your product launch or new contest was probably buried under a mountain of 140-character sound bites before it even had a chance to be seen.

The solution? Tweet the same content more than once. Don’t be shy! Yes, change the wording slightly, add a new image, keep things fresh, but don’t be afraid to repeat yourself. Studies show that repeat tweets still perform well, even up to the sixth time around. Repetition is the mother of learning after all.

No.3: Use the right hashtags.

Hashtags are like the Dewey Decimal System – they’re how you find what you’re looking for. Not into old school libraries? Alright, let’s unpack that analogy a little more. As we noted in an earlier post on these social media signposts, “hashtags are a great technique to tag your content and make sure that it reaches your target audience.”

Take the guesswork out of what hashtags to use a tool like Hashtagify or RiteTag; the former will point you in the direction of the most popular related hashtags, the latter will tell you just how relevant they are. Used together they’re like a superhero super squad, getting you the most visibility and reach.

No.4: Tweet at the right times.

Twitter never sleeps, and neither should you. JK! Of course you should sleep, sleep is essential, but just because you’re getting the recommended eight hours of shut-eye doesn’t mean your Twitter account should be snoozing along with you. With the number of scheduling tools available like Hootsuite and Buffer, there’s no excuse not to be posting when your audience is most active (even if that’s in the middle of the night in your time zone).

Not sure when that window of opportunity is open? There are countless studies discussing optimal times to tweet, but remember, every business is different, so do some of your own testings with a tool like Twitter Counter analytics.

No.5: Find leads in Twitter Chats.

A Twitter Chat (aka a Tweet Chat, Tweet Party or Twitter Party) is an online chat to discuss a specific topic, using a designated hashtag, at a pre-determined time. It’s also a great way to find leads. Why? Because it guarantees an audience of people who have self-selected to take part in a conversation about a topic they’re interested in. What more could a marketer ask for?

The best way to use Twitter Chats isn’t to sell yourself (remember, Twitter is ideally a social platform, not a platform for self-promotion), but to engage in meaningful interactions that will build your relationship with your audience and may connect you with influencers that you can then engage to support your brand. No.6: Develop a voice.

People pick the Twitter accounts they follow like they pick their friends – who’s interesting? who enjoys the same things that I do? who makes me laugh? And, just like each of us has our own voice, so should your Twitter account. Forget about trying to make everyone happy (that will never happen) and focus on being unique. Ditch generic for interesting. Eschew all-purpose for awesome. Be the friend who no one ever forgets.
