We get a lot of questions regarding the Tweet stats that we display on Twitter Counter. Especially when they don’t match up with the real numbers. How can this happen you ask? The answer is simple: it’s Twitter’s fault 🙂

As John Kalucki from Twitter explains in this post on Quora, a trade-off is made between logical correctness and system availability. This means that in some cases the number of tweets can be incorrect on Twitter. Like many other companies we get your data directly from the Twitter API, but sometimes this includes the wrong numbers. Since updates on Twitter Counter mostly happen only once a day this means that your Tweet stats on Twitter Counter for a given day can be incorrect too.

But how can you fix this?

The short answer is: we can’t. We can’t retrieve historic tweet numbers via the Twitter API, so we can’t really change the numbers retroactively. We could use anomaly detection, for example if the Tweet count deviates by a certain amount from the average. Or we could try and correct the number of tweets to something that seems normal. We can not however verify that the numbers we get from Twitter are incorrect or not. A user might tweet 10 times more tweets all of the sudden, there is now way to check that but manually. With over 12 million users in our database that is not a job that is easily done.

The only chance you have is when you spot the error on the day that the error occurred. Then you can update your stats by pressing “Update stats now” at the top of your user page. The stats will be retrieved again from Twitter and in most cases this solves the issue.
